Heart In The Right Place by Carolyn Jourdan

In the early 1990's, Carolyn Jourdan returned to the East Tennesee hills where she had grown up in order to help out at her father's rural health clinic for a few days while her mother recovered from a heart attack. A few days vacation from her high-powered job in Washington D.C. turned into almost ten years of translating the local dialect and the medicare system.

This true story is about the people she encountered that first year and how she learned about the sense of satisfaction and belonging one can get from participating in grassroots community service.

Discussion questions and the author website are on the right side of the page.

Books That Didn't Make The List

I have just finished compiling next year's book discussion list and thought people might be interested in some of the books that didn't make our list this time:

City of Thieves by David Benioff a story set in Leningrad (St Petersburg) during the siege of WWII. Based on a true story told to the author by his grandfather. During a time of great famine and hardship, two young men are tasked with finding enough eggs to make a wedding cake....

Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith - a murder mystery set in the Moscow area. Also, based on a true story about the first known serial killer in Soviet Russia.

O' Pioneers by Willa Cather - I just love her writing. I don't know why I didn't put this on. Maybe next year.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy - Scary! Read it before the movie comes out.

That's just a few of the great books we checked out for the group. If you are traveling for the holidays they are even better in audio. Enjoy.

Welcome

Hello and welcome to the Book Discussion Blog for the Timothy C. Hauenstein Reynolds Township Library. I am hoping you will enjoy reading and commenting on what others have to say about our books.

For the month of December, we will be reading "Regrets and Promises" by local author Dennis McGarry. He will also be our guest on Monday December 1 for the discussion which takes place at 1:30 pm. This book is a great read for men or women and will stick with you long after you have read it. We are also offering it for sale in the library for $7.99.

We hope you all have a great month.
